Having problems with your outlets or just want to check if they are working properly? There are several tools that can help you testing and/or troubleshooting your outlets. Here is a list of the most common ones:
1- Receptacle Testers ← Click link for examples
Simply plug these into an outlet and the display lights indicate the most common outlet wiring issues in standard and GFCI receptacles. Plug the instrument into the receptacle being tested and match the light pattern to the indicator chart to determine the fault.
2- Non-Contact Voltage Testers ← Click link for examples
Non-contact voltage testers are probably the safest testers around, and they're certainly the easiest to use. A non-contact tester allows you to check for voltage in outlets without you having to touch any wires or parts. Non-contact voltage testers light up when they detect current without needing to make direct contact. Visual (flashing) and audible (beeping) indicators signal presence of voltage.
3- Multimeters ← Click link for examples
Digital multimeters are measuring instruments that can measure quantities such as voltage, current, and resistance. Using a multimeter set to measure voltage, check the power at the outlet. For standard 120-volt residential outlets, you’ll expect to find readings between 110 and 130 volts. To test an outlet with a multimeter, be sure to read the instructions that came with your device first and be careful not to touch the metal prongs.
IMPORTANT: Safety First: Always be careful while performing tests on a live outlet. When in doubt, ask a professional for help and advice.
